There are three stages to the life insurance claims process:

For death claims, the payout is made to their personal representative to be distributed according to their will or the rules of intestacy if there is no will. Approved terminal illness claims are made to the life insured.

If you move abroad you will need to continue to pay the premium from a bank or building society in the UK in GBP or as otherwise approved by us.Few readersWhat happens if I miss a payment?
If at any time you don’t pay your premium when it is due, we will write to you to let you know and we will allow you 30 days to pay the outstanding premium. If you don’t pay 2 monthly payments in a row, your policy will be cancelled and no premium will be refunded to you. Your premium is guaranteed not to change for the duration of your policy.Few readersWho can submit a claim?
Anyone can initiate a claim, however proof is required that the claimant is the correct person to receive the payout. For example, grant of probate, will, trust deed, letters of representation or administration.Few readersWill my payout be taxed?
The payout is usually free of all UK income tax and capital gains tax. The amount paid might be subject to inheritance tax, depending on the total value of the life insured’s estate. For more info about this, see gov.uk/inheritance-tax. If the life insured resides outside the UK at the time of a claim, the taxes of the country of residence could apply to the amount received (refer to ‘Moving abroad’ in the policy wording for more details).Few readersWhat happens at the end of the policy?

There is no cancellation fee. You can cancel your life insurance policy at any time. If you cancel within the first 30 days (cool-off period) you will receive a full refund of the premium you paid unless a claim has been paid.Few readersWill my premiums stop when a claim is submitted?
If the claim is for the death of the life insured, then the premiums will stop from the date of death. Any premiums paid after this date could potentially be refunded.
